China government urge Canada to obey the one-China code

China government, one-China code, China-Taiwan tensions

The complicated forces at play in their bilateral relationship are highlighted by China government that Canada adheres to the one-China code. For China, maintaining the one-China policy is crucial because it safeguards the country’s sovereignty and sense of identity.

To navigate this situation, Canada will need to strike a delicate balance between its domestic concerns and its international commitments. Finding common ground and promoting understanding will be essential for sustaining a positive discussion and collaboration in many areas of shared interest as both countries work to deepen their relations.

China-Taiwan tensions are mounting in recent times after the visit of the US House of Representatives speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The tensions further escalated when a designated Canadian Member of Parliament was reportedly scheduled to officially visit the island in the depth of 2022. The visit is about exploring trade prospects.

The relationship between China and Canada has recently encountered many difficulties, including disagreements over the one-China policy. China’s leadership has consistently urged Canada to observe and abide by the one-China code as tensions have persisted.

The Republic of China warned to take strong action if Canada showed interference in Taiwan matters.

The core point of warning is China’s rights regarding Taiwan as their land under the one-China principle of the Chinese administration.

First, the United States holds formal consolations with Taiwan to increase trade connections. In the meantime, the Canadian administration also wants to discover trade opportunities in Taiwan.

Amid all these international visits, China is seeking a strong approach against international interference.

The China government stated in a statement,

“We [China government] urge the administration of Canada to obey the one-China code and esteem the rule and regional integrity of China. China will take firm actions to counter any state that tries to inhibit with or overstep upon China’s rule and regional integrity.”

The one-China principle and respect for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are two things that the Chinese embassy in Canada has urged Canada to uphold in a statement.

The embassy stated that China would take tough action against any nation that meddled with or threatened its territorial integrity or sovereignty. The declaration serves as a reminder of China’s constant stance on these issues and foreshadows possible outcomes for nations, including Canada, that are thought to violate China’s values.

The planned travel to Taiwan by Canadian legislators, according to a spokesperson for foreign minister Melanie Joly, should not be used by China as justification for military or economic aggression. This declaration was made in reaction to China’s threat to use “forceful measures” if Canada meddled in Taiwan’s internal affairs.

China asserts Taiwan is part of its territory in accordance with the “one-China principle,” but democratically run Taiwan rejects China’s claims. Canada maintains a one-China policy, which recognizes Beijing diplomatically while supporting Taiwan covertly.

Canada and the United States follow a one-China rule that is familiar to Beijing, not Taipei, diplomatically. However, unofficial support is for Taiwan.

This is something that sours the ties of China with the West.

The representative highlighted that the Canadian government supports individual travel decisions made by parliamentary associations and friendship groups. Additionally, they emphasized that parliamentary visits should not be used as an excuse for violence or other violent behavior.

A legislative friendship group from Canada announced last week that they planned to travel to Taiwan to look into business opportunities. In retaliation, China issued a warning, threatening to retaliate against any nation that interfered with its territorial integrity or sovereignty.

The recent trip to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has highlighted Western-Taipei relations as well. Before the pandemic, Canada visited Taiwan frequently.

According to the Canadian politicians organizing the trip, their main concern is commerce and they don’t want to upset or trouble China or Taiwan.

The Canadian spokeswoman advised everyone to maintain composure, use prudence, and keep channels of communication open in order to prevent misunderstandings.
