China-Taiwan tensions are mounting in recent times after the visit of the US House of Representatives speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
The tensions further escalated when a designated Canadian Member of Parliament was reportedly scheduled to officially visit the island in the depth of 2022. The visit is about exploring trade prospects.
The Republic of China warned to take strong action if Canada showed interference in Taiwan matters.
The core point of warning is China’s rights regarding Taiwan as their land under the one-China principle of the Chinese administration.
First, the United States holds formal consolations with Taiwan to increase trade connections. In the meantime, the Canadian administration also wants to discover trade opportunities in Taiwan.
Amid all these international visits, China is seeking a strong approach against international interference.
The Chinese embassy stated in a statement,
“We [China government] urge the administration of Canada to obey the one-China code and esteem the rule and regional integrity of China. China will take firm actions to counter any state that tries to inhibit with or overstep upon China’s rule and regional integrity.”
Canada and the United States follow a one-China rule that is familiar to Beijing, not Taipei, diplomatically. However, unofficial support is for Taiwan.
This is something that sours the ties of China with the west.
